'Ragamuffin' Movie Now in Theaters; Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith and More Remember Rich Mullins, 'There's Nobody Close to Being like He Was'
"Ragamuffin," a film based on the life and legacy of Rich Mullins a Christian music singer/songwriter, premiered today May 2, 2014 in select theaters and other Christian artists have chimed in.
The Color Green Films' full-length feature was released in 15 cities around the nation including Nashville, Dallas, Indianapolis, Columbus, Atlanta, Phoenix, Colorado Springs, and Wichita among others.
The plot summary of the film on IMDB states that the film is a documentary feature film based on the life and legacy of Mullins.
The films synopsis reads:
"'Ragamuffin' is based on the life of Rich Mullins, a musical prodigy who rose to Christian music fame and fortune only to walk away and live on a Navajo reservation. An artistic genius, raised on a tree farm in Indiana by a callous father, Rich wrestled all of his life with the brokenness and crippling insecurity born of his childhood. A lover of Jesus and a rebel in the church, Rich refused to let his struggles with his own darkness tear him away from a God he was determined to love. As he struggled with success in Nashville and depression in Wichita, Rich desired most of all to live a life of honest and reckless faith amidst a culture of religion and conformity."
The movie's website speaks very highly of Mullins. "He was a prophet and a poet and a beggar, more comfortable with the homeless than the wealthy, more in love with Jesus than religion, more interested in the music than the song. He felt too much, and held too much. He searched desperately his whole life for a way to belong down here, but he never did. He was just passing through," the website said.
Mullins was inducted into the hall of fame earlier this year and although he probably would not care much for the honor people have always spoke his praise.
"He was captivating... the music was so full of emotion," Amy Grant said of Mullins according to the movie's official site.
"I said to myself, 'This is what it means to live by Grace rather than performance,'" Brennan Manning added in regards to the singer.
Michael W. Smith agreed with his peers and said, "There's nobody that wrote songs like Rich. And there's nobody close to being like he was."
"Ragamuffin" the film stars Michael Koch as Rich Mullins. It was written by Ashleigh Phillips and David Leo Schultz, and produced and directed by Schultz. Additional producers include David Mullins (Rich's younger brother), David Holechek, and Ryan Bodie.
The film showcases several members of the Mullins' family and features the talents of Schultz (as Sam); Wolfgang Bodison (Bryan); James Kyson (Matt); Mel Fair (John Mullins); Carson Aune (Justin); Elizabeth Ann Roberts (Jess) and Michelle Keller (Neva Mullins). The film's title comes from A Ragamuffin Band, a band name that was inspired by Brennan Manning's book, "The Ragamuffin Gospel."
Author of Rich Mullins: An Arrow Pointing to Heaven, James Bryan Smith spoke highly of the film. "Ragamuffin is a beautiful and moving film that captures one man's struggle to overcome the trappings of success, and to learn how to accept the unconditional love of God. Whether or not you are a fan of Rich Mullins, you will be touched by this movie. It is honest, accurate, and unafraid to show Rich's scars, yet pointing us all to the deeper truth even if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts," Smith said.?
