'The Purge' Wins the Weekend Box Office Knocking off 'Fast & Furious 6', 'The Internship' Flops
The Fast & Furious 6 has had a good run on top but got slowed down this weekend losing its #1 box office spot to the action/thrill movie, The Purge.
The Purge was out the idea of government shutting down for 12 hours and making all crime legal for that period with no arrests taking place. Every person is on their own and defending themselves.
The plot of The Purge hoped to strike a "what if" scenario in peoples heads enough to make them check out the movie and see what could happen and it worked, winning the box office weekend.
It also acknowledges the intrigue of the moral equation of things and that it does interest people, good or bad.
The Purge brought in over $36 million dollars to win the weekend box office by almost double the competition. Even more impressive was the fact that The Purge was in less theaters than other new releases around the country.
Fast & Furious 6 came in just under $20 million (19.7) and Now You See Me at $19.5 million as of now. Those numbers could adjust some as they trickle in from all theaters.
The Internship failed to live up to the hype bringing in just $18.1 million and finishing 4th in the box office this weekend.
The Internship was hoping to spark the same success as Wedding Crashers reuniting Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in the comedy flick about Google but the magic did not happen, in box office numbers at least.
