PS4 vs Xbox One Sales: PlayStation 4 Sells Over 1 Million More Units than Xbox One in 2013

The PlayStation 4 beat out the Xbox One in total sales for 2013 by over one million units sold despite the smaller market release of the Sony console.

PS4 sold 4.2 million consoles from November 15 to December 31, it was also only released in the U.S. for over a month before it began to debut in other countries. It is now in 53 countries.

Microsoft's console, launched on November 22 in 13 market worldwide. In that time span, the Xbox One sold roughly three million units.

PS4 is $399 while the Xbox One is $499, and despite the high price tags, both console's have sold amazingly well and are continuing to sell at a good pace.

According to Polygon, Sony is looking to sell five million units by March 2014, and they appear to be way ahead of target. They sold one million on launch day alone.

"The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn't be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network," Sony President Andrew House said in a prepared statement at the CES. "After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014."

In addition to big console sales, House also stated 9.7 million games have been sold.

Microsoft recently announced they sold three million consoles in 2013 as well.

"Over 3 million Xbox One consoles were sold to consumers in 13 countries before the end of 2013," said Mehdi, corporate vice president of marketing, strategy and business for Microsoft's Xbox division on Xbox Wire.

According to Microsoft, the Xbox One also sold over one million consoles on its launch day, and hit the two million mark just 13 days later making it the fastest selling console in the U.S. for the month.

"November NPD Group figures released today revealed 909,132 Xbox One units were sold in the U.S. in the console's first nine days, making it the fastest selling console on the market in the U.S. Xbox One sales averaged a volume of more than 101,000 consoles per day, significantly outpacing the nearest competitor," a statement from the Xbox Wire read last month.
