President Obama 3rd Term Rumors Are Fake
An article published in satire news website the National Report has sparked confusion among some groups, after their mock report claimed that President Barack Obama was planning to run for a third term in office. In fact, the report even claimed that Obama had already announced his decision in this regard. However, the report has been confirmed to be fake and was just a piece of satire from the website.
The article in National Report stated, "President Barack Obama shocked the country this morning with news that he is running for a third term."
It quotes President Obama telling the media, "I can't abandon the American people now when they need me more than ever," adding, "We've come this far as a nation, now is not the time to do something different. This is the change you wanted and this is the change you're getting."
The article also quotes Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky telling CNN that he is in disagreement with Obama over the issue, "This defies everything the Constitution stands for," Paul is reported in the mock report to have told CNN, adding "We cannot let this man have a third term."
In a bid to convince its readers, the article says, "In the history of this country only two presidents have served more than two terms, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D, Roosevelt. The major problem for Obama when he runs in 2016 is the 22nd Amendment. In short, the 22nd Amendment states, "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice..."
According to the National Report, the U.S. Constitution does make an exception in the 22nd Amendment: "This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several states within seven years from the date of its submission to the states by the Congress."
That claimed that Obama's third term presidential run would only be valid if he received 75% approval from the Congress.
The National Report does in fact come with a disclaimer saying that it doesn't post real news stories, and that the entire site is meant to be satire.
It states, "National Report is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within National Report are fiction, and presumably fake news. Any resemblance to the truth is purely coincidental."
While the disclaimer was taken down, it is still accessible via Archive.org.
The satirical article about Obama's third term had thousands of "likes" and shares on Facebook, with many people apparently believing it.
