Pope Francis News: Pope Remained Impartial About World Cup 2014, Hopes Soccer Will Inspire Solidarity
Pope Francis has announced that he will be visiting an Evangelical pastor from Buenos Aires, according to the Catholic News Agency.
The pastor is currently residing in Caserta in Italy and is said to be a close friend of the Pope. Reports say that the Pope will be traveling to the Italian Campagna region on July 26th for this private visit.
It said that the visit was inspired by the Pope's recent run-in with a group of Evangelical pastors at the Vatican last month where he expressed interest in visiting the Evangelical Church of Reconciliation.
Meanwhile, Pope Francis had also vowed to remain impartial when it came to talk of the World Cup. Argentina of course played Germany in the World Cup Final on Sunday, with the game going all the way into extra time. Germany eventually won the game with a late goal scored just seven minutes before penalties were scheduled to be happening.
Pope Benedict, who is a known soccer fan, was said to have gone to watch Bayern Munich play when he was still an archbishop in the German city; while Pope Francis is oted as a fan of the San Lorenzo de Almagro team of Buenos Aires.
This year's World Cup pitted the the former Pope against the current one, this led to many caricatures of the two watching the match appearing in newspapers and online news outlets. The only information about whether the two actually watched the match was a statement from Federico Lombardi, the Spokesman for the Vatican, who said the Pope "might watch."
A June 12 interview expressed the Pope's hope that the World Cup would inspire solidarity among people.
