PlayStation 4 Sales: 5.3 Million Since Release Date, Sony Ahead of Year's Goal
The PlayStation 4 has surpassed 5.3 million units sold worldwide, according to new NPD data released on Feb. 8, showing that the new console is selling at a rate exceeding expectations.
In addition to this staggering number, PS4 lead all consoles in sales for the month of January. What is also amazing about these high sales numbers is that Sony did it without launching in Japan yet. As of right now the system is available in 32 regions, and Japan will join in on the 22, which should bump up the sales significantly.
"The PS4 system's momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans," Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., said in a released statement. "I'm looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4."
Further reports indicate that PS4 almost doubled the sales of the Xbox One in January, after the Microsoft console sold more in December.

Extremetech is reporting that the PS4 has sold every single console it has put on shelves. The only reason PS4 lagged behind in December a bit was because Sony ran out of stock.
4.2 million PS4's were sold in 2013 compared to 3 million Xbox One's.
The PlayStation 4 launched on November 15 for $399, and has seen steady sales throughout its short lifespan.
