Philadelphia 76ers News: Sixers’ Embiid ‘Healing Less Than Anticipated’ According to Hinkie
The Philadelphia 76ers under the regime of general manager and president Sam Hinkie has been a practice of utmost patience, with their penchant for collecting and trading assets for even more assets with their sights set on rebuilding despite the absence of a deadline. And now, reports have surfaced that the plan may take a while longer as center Joel Embiid has reportedly suffered a setback in the healing process of his right foot.
As reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the third overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft, who missed his entire rookie season with injuries, had a recent CT scan that revealed an issue in the healing process of his surgically repaired foot. According to the report, Philadelphia is consulting with doctors on how to best proceed.
"As part of the conservative approach focused on the long-term health, recovery and care of Joel, we have been closely monitoring his progress, regularly evaluating his status and adjusting our plans accordingly," Hinkie said in a statement.
Our priority remains providing Joel with every opportunity to ensure he has a long and successful NBA career, and as such, these findings cause us to pause and reassess his current activities."
The 7'1" Embiid had been expected to be part of the Sixers' summer league teams in July, and has been going through weeks of "rigorous workouts" as noted by the Yahoo Sports report. Wojnarowski writes that eyewitness accounts during Embiid's recent workouts in Southern California have the described the promising center as dominant and explosive.
During his lone year at the University of Kansas, Embiid appeared to improve every facet of his game with every performance, starting off the campaign as defensive presence, and showing glimpses of rare offensive skill later in the season.
His tenure with the Jayhawks was cut short by a back injury, and just several days before the 2014 Draft, he had surgery for a stress fracture on his foot that had the Sixers deciding to sit him out for the his whole rookie season.
