Super Bowl XLVIII to Feature Peyton Manning vs Russell Wilson - Fierce Enemies on the Field, Christian Brothers in Christ Off the Field
This year's Super Bowl, will be a battle between the sixteen year veteran Denver Broncos' QB Peyton Manning and the second year Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. There is one thing that some NFL fans may not know: both Manning and Wilson have a strong self-professed faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
"Some players get more vocal about it-the Reggie Whites, for example-and some point to Heaven after scoring a touchdown and praise God after games," penned the 37-year-old Manning in his 2001 book co-written with his father Archie titled "Manning." "I have no problem with that. But I don't do it, and don't think it makes me any less a Christian. I just want my actions to speak louder, and I don't want to be more of a target for criticism than I already am."
The former Indianapolis Colts QB does not pray to God for a win before a football game, but instead for the well-being of both teams. Manning also discussed his personal relationship with God.
"I pray every night, sometimes long prayers about a lot of things and a lot of people, but I don't talk about it or brag about it because that's between God and me, and I'm no better than anybody else in God's sight," wrote Manning in his book.
Manning's Super Bowl opponent Russell Wilson may be on opposing sides on February 2, but Wilson echoed Manning's views.
"Jesus is love," Wilson along with other Christian Seahawk members said in a YouTube interview with Pastor Mark Driscoll. "At the end of the day, we are all looking for someone to comfort us, somebody to be there for us at all times. When we are at the worst times of our lives, when we are battling with something, or struggles, whatever it may be, when we are at our highest point as well, when things are going really well, we want somebody to comfort us and be there for us and to say, 'Well done.' That's Jesus. Jesus has always been there. He'll never leave you, never forsake you."
"Literally, Jesus is the greatest treasure in the universe," said Seahawks Assistant Coach Rocky Seto, in the same Wilson interview. "It just makes sense. It's not like you give up your life and then you get something worse. He gave us everything. We had nothing, He gave us everything, so literally it's just one plus one equals two, it's that simple. Jesus is better than anything... even better than the Super Bowl, better than an NFL career, any of that."
This year's Super Bowl will be Peyton Manning's third appearance at the event and Russell Wilson's first.
Super Bowl XLVIII will be played on February 2 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, and will air on Fox.
