'Persecuted' Movie 'Is Not So Far-Fetched Today’ Sen. Fred Thompson Says of Government's Attempted Restriction on Christian Ministers (VIDEO)

Former U.S. senator/Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson and director Daniel Lusko attend a panel discussion at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington Friday to discuss their new Christian film "Persecuted." Stating that it is a timely political display of events that are taking place today.

Along with all the Biblical Block Busters coming to the big screen this year. Persecuted hopes to make an impact. The film explores the political topics of religious freedom, government surveillance and censorship.

The political thiller was written by Daniel Lusko and stars well-known actor James Remar as a televangelist who is framed for murder after he refuses to support a popular wave of religious reform in the U.S. The film also stars Thompson, Dean Stockwell, and Bruce Davison.

Thompson told CPAC that the movie's theme of "the government trying to dictate what Christian ministers can say ... is not so far-fetched today."

"Current events have certainly caught up. I wrote the script five years ago," Lusko Added.

Lusko said he anticipates the film to open on 600 screens May 9, but Regal Entertainment, which owns exhibitors Regal Cinemas, United Artists and Edwards, has not committed to a screen count yet. The writer also stated "Persecuted" was screened before members of congress, and was very well received by the conservative crowd.

"Washington and Hollywood are two interesting towns," Thompson told The Hollywood Reporter in a previous interview. "This film brings these two worlds together. Throw in a bit of religion and you have a recipe for a great thriller. I can't wait for America to watch this film. It's perfect for our times."

Although the film has had very little marketing up to this point, the movie's trailer reached No. 1 on iTunes "most popular."

Film makers are asking local organizations, Churches, Schools and businesses to help bring the Christian thriller to local communities in its opening weekend.
