'Pacific Rim' Movie Snubbed at Box Office by Record-Breaking 'Despicable Me 2'? Guillermo del Toro, Charlie Hunnam Official Trailer 2013
As Guillermo del Toro's new monsters versus robots movie Pacific Rim hits theaters Friday, the world will get its first real look at Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam.
The English actor plays Raleigh Becket, who leads giant robot Jaeger against the movie's villainous monster Kaiju.
Though Pacific Rim has received a lot of hype from fanboys, it's up against some stiff box office competition in its opening weekend. The Christopher Nolan-inspired Man of Steel movie is still chugging along while World War Z wrangles in the zombie crowd.
Despicable Me 2 is the real competition for Hunnam and del Toro. It's first five days in theaters, Despicable Me earned a record-breaking $143 Million. It barely beat out competing animated kids film Monsters University brought in $82.4 million.
The $143 million Despicable Me 2 brought in is the best five-day opening for an animated film. The previous record holder was Shrek 2 hauling in $128.9 million in May 2004.
Though Pacific Rim is targeting a different demographic [nerds], the fact that parents are taking there kids to a animated film instead of sci-fi date night could hurt the flick's box office opening.
If giant lizards taking on giant robots isn't your thing then Pacific Rim may not be the movie choice for you. Either way it's better than The Lone Ranger. Sorry, Johnny this one was a bust.
Here's the official trailer for Pacific Rim starring Charlie Hunnam. Oh, and the guy from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia!
