Oscars 2014: Matthew McConaughey and Darlene Love Met With Mixed Responses For Thanking God During Acceptance Speech, 'When You Got God You Got a Friend' (VIDEO)
Matthew McConaughey and Darlene Love both thanked God after at the 2014 Academy awards and the reception the two received from the audience were polar opposites but they were both met with a very intolerant response from social media.
The winners for best actor, actress, and film are always a big topic after the The Academy Awards, commonly known as The Oscars. Surprisingly, that was not the only topic of discussion for the 2014 Oscars. The hashtag #Oscars2014 was met with many people on social media talking about who thanked God during the show.
"First off I want to thank God, because he's the one I look up to, he's graced my life with opportunities which I know are not of my hand or any other human kind," the 44-year-old Texas native McConaughey said. "He has shown me that it's a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late (British actor) Charlie Laughton, who said, 'When you got God you got a friend and that friend is you.'"
Although McConaughey's words were sincere his acknowledgement of God received only hand full of applause from the audience and mixed reactions on social media.
"Well after watching all the ?Oscars, I consider Matthew McConaughey speech to not only be the best, but his public love for God was brave," one noted.
"OK so you really deserved it McConaughey. Just stop the stupid god talk," tweeted another. Another weighed in, "I thought we could get through the Oscars without someone thanking god but no he had to ruin it. **** you McConaughey."
20 Feet From Stardom's Morgan Neville, Documentary Feature won for best documentary and since the film's producer the late Gil Friesen could not be there to receive the award one of the movies subjects Darlene Love accepted award.
Many are saying she "stole the moment" because not only was she extremely grateful for the honor, she also delivered her acceptance speech by thanking God and singing the song "His Eye is on the Sparrow" In praise to Him for the world to hear and see. The demonstration immediately brought everyone in the room to their feet in applause.
Although Love was greatly applauded by those in attendance, some well-known Media outlets could not help but criticize Love for her bold declaration of faith as others believers on social media truly appreciated her speech.
"Darlene Love praising God. Beautiful," on wrote, another adding, "God Bless Darlene Love!!!"
Love's speech made everyone very aware of who else thanked God at the Oscars as well as the response received after tanking God.
"Darlene Love's awesome acceptance got a standing ovation. McConaughey's praise to God received nervous murmurs," an observer tweeted.
