Oscar Pistorius Trial News: 'Blade Runner' Sending Money to Steenkamp Family? Sentencing Friday

South African sprint runner Oscar Pistorious returned to court in Pretoria, South Africa on Wednesday, Oct. 15. "Blade Runner" now back on trial, has been allegedly sending money to the victim's family members.

When Annette Vergeer, a probation officer siding the defense testified on Tuesday, Oct.14, she revealed that Pistorius was regularly sending money to girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp's family after he killed her on Feb. 14, 2013.

Vergeer stated that the Steenkamps have been receiving $550 per month which started in March last year and ended September 2014.

However, prosecutor Gerrie Nel, explained that June and Barry Steenkamp refused to accept a lump-sum payment amounting to $33,000, deeming it as "blood money."

The money was, however, given to the Steenkamps to help their "rent and expenses" when they were reportedly having a hard time financially back in March 2013, according to the Steenkamp's lawyer, Dup de Bruyn.

Advocate Dup de Bruyn stressed that the Steenkamps wanted to cancel the payments against a civil claim for damages, but chose to repay the monthly stipends instead.

As for Pistorius, he stated that the payments remain confidential and made the payments "unconditionally" without seeking to get paid in return, according to Barry Roux, Pistorius' lead defense lawyer.

Roux also emphasized that the Steenkamps "did not want any payment for Pistorius."

After the trials, which started in March, Pistorious was deemed guilty last September of culpable homicide- "unlawful or negligent killing," but was relieved of heavier murder charges.

Pistorius defended himself saying that he shot Reeva Steenkamp accidentally because he thought an intruder was in his Pretoria home.

His sentence would reportedly mean paying a mere fine or spending 15 years in prison.

Meanwhile, final discretion of the case will end on Friday, as Judge Masipa will have to hand down a sentence.
