Oscar Pistorius Trial Latest Update: Facebook Scammers Solicit Money for Trial Support

The trial of star-athlete Oscar Pistorius is on a break, but scammers soliciting donations for support are still abound on social media.

There are several Facebook pages soliciting financial support to assist Pistorius in his trial. One Facebook page even claims that it is Pistorius' older brother Carl who asks readers for donations to help the star athlete pay for his defense.

The fake Facebook page has a photograph of Carl appealing to readers for assistance.

"We seek financial support for the trial, debts and pending projects we have at hand," the fraudulent Facebook page posted. "If you are interested in working actively with us in this direction, please do contact: Mrs. Victoria Anderson at vicandersonl@hotmail.com."

"Thank you all for the continued support and words of encouragement during this difficult time. Pray for Oscar," the latest post stated.

However, the Pistorius family has condemned the solicitations and said that the Facebook page, including several others, is illegitimate.

A spokeswoman of the Pistorius family took to the media and cautioned people about the social media scams. In an interview with the Star, Anneliese Burgess made it clear that the family of the star athlete has nothing to do with the solicitations. Her public statement was intended to address a scam inviting people interested in the trial to meet in Sunnydale, Pretoria, to talk about what they can do.

Burgess then made an appeal to Facebook to shut the fake Facebook pages down that are soliciting money from people. She said that social media accounts of legitimate members of the Pistorius family are either in full privacy settings or deactivated.

Before the murder trial, Oscar Pistorius made headlines when he became the first amputee to compete in the 2011 World Championships in Athletics and win an able-bodied world track medal.

He has set world records at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and won gold medals in the men's 400-meter race and 4 x 100 meters relay.

Pistorius was charged for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, whom Pistorius allegedly shot in his home on February 14, 2013.
