Oscar Pistorius Sentencing Date Arrives: Sentence Will Be No Imprisonment to Maxium 15 Years
The South African Olympic sprint runner dubbed the "Blade Runner," Oscar Pistorius, will face sentencing Monday, Oct. 13, following a trial about the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius was initially acquitted of murder since he had substantiated the firing, telling the South African authorities that he thought the person behind the bathroom door was an intruder.
Instead, the court found the runner guilty of culpable homicide on Sept. 12 after shooting Reeva Steenkamp, his girlfriend, four times. Though a jury system does not exist in South Africa, Judge Thokozile Masipa will be giving Pistorius a sentence which will range from no imprisonment with a fine, to a maximum of 15 years.
The 61-year old father of Oscar, Henke Pistorius, shared the kind of relationship he had with his son after the shooting took place in February of the previous year. He said that they had exchanged messages of getting together to "have a long talk."
"Since the tragedy, he hasn't had a decent talk with me. He hasn't yet talked to me from his heart. I know it's going to happen. It's going to happen soon and it will be good for both of us," the runner's father added.
The older Pistorius admitted that he was sometimes "too hard" on his son and regrets how he had raised his children. His wife died when he was 15, and since then was taking care of his son.
"I was strict. I think I could have spent more time with my children when they were small. But I had to work. I had to earn money," the father said.
Meanwhile, the book entitled 'Behind the Door' claimed that the runner was on the phone with his former girlfriend, Jenna Edkins, before the shooting happened. Edkins dated younger Pistorius inconsistently for five years and admitted that they still made communication.
Barry Bateman and Mandy Wiener, Eyewitness News journalists, mention in the book that the investigators failed to know the phone conversation of the two because the younger Pistorius named Edkins on his phone as "babyshoes."
The information sparked speculation that the verdict could have been different if that was known earlier in court.
