Oscar Pistorius Murder Trial Update, Latest News: Verdict Date Will Be September 11, 2014
Only one month remains until the verdict is given about Oscar Pistorius and his innocence or guilt in a court of law. Following the recent closing arguments given by the defense and prosecution, the judge handling the trial said that she's have a verdict ready by September 11.
The closing arguments from Pistorius' defense lawyer Barry Roux, maintained the not guilty plea that was pushed from the start of the trial. More specifically, Pistorius admitted that he shot his girlfriend, Reeva, on Valentine's Day last year, but was firmly convinced that he did not intentionally murder her. He and his defense claim that she was mistaken as an intruder in the night.
One of the harder points to swallow from the defense argument, was that no evidence suggested that Pistorius had premeditated the murder, nor had any motive to kill Reeva Steenkamp.
Also, the defense mentioned that Pistorius was not thinking when he pulled the trigger, and that the judge should think of it as a self-defense state of mind. This point resulted from a previous testimony that said Pistorious felt threatened by the alleged intruder.
Additionally, Roux also showed a photo of a police officer who had sworn he didn't touch any object at the crime scene, with his hand on a plug in the athlete's bedroom.
On the other hand, prosecutor Gerrie Nel built his closing speech on tearing apart Pistorius' character and witness statements, which Nel found vague and argumentative to say the least.
He continued by saying that the Paralympics athlete new exactly what he was doing when he shot Reeva Steenkamp. He went on disputing that the testimonies of some of the other witnesses could be unreliable. In the end though, judge Masipa will be the one deciding if Oscar Pistorius will spend the following 25 years behind bars or not.
