Oscar Pistorius Murder Trial Verdict News: Culpable Homicide - Maximum 15 Years Prison Sentence
South African Judge Thokozile Masipa announced on Friday that the double-amputee blade runner Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide after shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013 on Valentine's Day. The court also found Pistorus guilty of one count of discharging a firearm in public.
As per the law in South Africa, a culpable homicide charge carries with it a maximum sentence of 15 years. However, Pistorius was acquitted of two other charges involving a separate firearm discharge incident and possessing ammunition illegally.
On Thursday, the court cleared Pistorius of all murder charges and Masipa pronounced that the prosecution's case was completely based on "circumstantial evidence" and that the state was unable to prove "beyond reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty of premeditated murder."
On Friday, the court granted bail for Pistorius until the sentencing. Mapisa said the court will pronounce a judgement on Oct. 13. However, the judge also ruled that the state could appeal to cancel the bail in case there was any misconduct on the part of Pistorius,
On that note, reports claim that Pistorius has sold his home in order to pay for the trial and all the entailing fees.
Earlier, prosecutor Gerrie Nel argued against granting bail to Pistorius, refuting the defense's claim that the double amputee had sold off property to pay his trial.
On Friday, Nel told the Gauteng High Court, "I do disagree with (Barry) Roux, and am of the view that this is a serious case, he was convicted of a very serious case, he caused the death of an innocent woman, even negligently... makes the imposition of a lengthy imprisonment probable."
During his trial, Pistorius acknowledged that although he fired the shots that killed Steenkamp on Feb. 14, 2013, he thought an intruder had burglarized their home and was threatening his life.
The judge described Pistorius as "a very poor witness" in her first ruling on Thursday, saying that though he was able to maintain his poise throughout questioning by his defense attorneys, he crumbled when he faced aggressive questions.
Reflecting, 27-year-old blade runner Pistorius has been facing trial since March 3 for shooting and killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Feb. 14, 2013. His trial has held people in South Africa and also elsewhere captivated for over six months now.
From the beginning, the case received widespread media coverage, including a 24-hour TV channel on South Africa's top cable provider created exclusively to cover the case.
