OS X Yosemite Release Date, Features List: Apple Reveals Latest OS Version, Set to Land Fall 2014

Apple made the latest update of its desktop operating system christened OS X Yosemite public at its much awaited Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco on Monday. The good news is that the latest update of OS X will be free.

Named after the famed Yosemite National Park, the new operating system not only has a new look, but also comes with a new toolbar, a dark mode, new notification center features and other attributes.

Speaking on the occasion, Apple senior-vice president (software engineering) Craig Federighi said, "All in all, they come together for a gorgeous and more usable version of OS X, the best ever."

According to Federighi, Yosemite uses "carefully crafted translucent materials" for the panels.

The Apple executive revealed that his company opted for the name OS X Yosemite after narrowing it down from OS X Oxnard and OS X Weed, which are named after two cities in California.

Federighi joked, "Strangely (Weed) had large pockets of support." The city of Weed is located in Northern California, north of Redding.

A report in CNET says the Cupertino-headquartered tech titan will release the updated operating system in the fall. However, people who are unable to wait can sign up for a beta version beforehand.

MODIFICATIONS IN MAC COMPUTERS

The forthcoming Mac system will be known as Yosemite, deriving its name from the national park, breaking the pattern from large wild cats.

Now, users will be able to search content on their computer as well as the Internet simultaneously, something akin to the Microsoft Windows 8 features.

Now the iCloud storage will also be expanded, enabling the user to store as well as sync all types of files, in addition to those especially designed for iCloud - something similar to Dropbox.

A new Mail Drop feature will make sending larger files easier. Instead of sending the files through email, now you can send the files via a link established with the recipient.

The Safari Web browser of Mac will also feature additional privacy controls and means to easily share links.
