Oculus Rift Sales Suspended In China: ‘Extreme’ Reselling Set Backs
The new and popular innovation Oculus Rift virtual reality headset has been suspended from sales in China due to reselling. People have been selling the product illegitimately causing stock in Oculus to decrease.
Recently, Oculus began shipping the latest version of the development kit (DK2) to developers, including those in China.
The DK2 headset is not intended for consumers as it is designed for developers to test with and create content for. After issues with its reselling, deemed "extreme," Oculus has put a stop to anymore sales to Chinese developers.
An Oculus representative had this to say on the matter, "Yes, it is a bummer that we've had to suspend sales in China due to extreme reseller purchases," via Reddit.
The representative continued," "We need to make sure that we are doing what we can to make sure that resellers that are looking to flip our product for a profit are not taking stock away from legitimate developer purchases globally," adding, "Our product, in its current form, is a developer kit, meant for developers that develop VR content."
Oculus made mentioned that they are working on an alternative way for the developers of China to get their hands on the product for developmental purposes only.
Oculus Rift DK2 unit costs $350 and can be ordered from the Oculus VR website, and in order to do so, a straightforward disclaimer must be adhered to, the terms read, "I understand this hardware is intended for developers and it is not a consumer product."
While Oculus expects new orders of their DK2 to ship in September 2014, there's still no word on a release for the consumer version.
The Oculus representative left Oculus Rift eager consumers with this statement, "If you are an enthusiast, we kindly ask that you wait for the consumer Rift. It will be worth the wait."
