Last night, NY Knicks star Carmelo Anthony made history as he set an All-Star Game record with eight three-pointers as the Eastern Conference defeated the Western Conference by the final score of 163-155 in New Orleans. Anthony scored 30 points to aid the East in snapping a three-game losing streak in the All-Star Game. The 318 combined points tallied set a new All-Star Game record.
Cleveland Cavaliers' Kyrie Irving also had a great game, scoring 31 points along with 14 assists. As a result, Irving won the MVP award instead of Anthony, but both were influential in the improbable comeback.
The East trailed by as many 18 points in the third quarter before the East squad started to play some defense. In addition, the East also played better on offense, ending the game on a 10-0 run.
The LA Clippers' Blake Griffin had an awesome game for the West, scoring 38 points on 19-of-23 shooting. The 19 field goals also set an All-Star Game record for most made field goals plus he also had six rebounds. OKC Thunder's Kevin Durant also had a great game, and almost obtained a triple-double with 38 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
The Western squad led by two points at the end of the first quarter, and after a competitive start in the second quarter, they gained full control. The West All-Stars went on a 19-6 run, due to Durant finishing the first half on a dominant note to take an 89-76 lead into the break. The 165 combined points in the first half was an All-Star Game record.
The West looked like they were going to destroy the Eastern All-Stars at numerous points during the third quarter. However, the East went on an impressive 16-0 run to trail the West by only two points. When Trailblazers' Damian Lillard finally hit a three pointer, it ended a scoring drought by the West All-Star team that lasted more than four minutes before Wizards point guard and 2014 Slam Dunk Champion John Wall scored a layup. This made it a 126-123 game in favor of the West heading into the final quarter where the Eastern All-Star team completed the upset victory by the final score of 163-155.
