'Noah' Movie Controversy: Emma Watson Defends Director Darren Aronofsky's Interpretation of the Biblical Story
Darren Aronofsky's new movie "Noah" has received some criticism from people because the story is very different to what was depicted in the Bible. "Noah" and Former "Harry Potter" actress Emma Watson recently came to the defense of her director's interpretation of the Biblical Story.
"I think with any text there is always artistic license, you're always looking at someone's specific interpretation of it," said Watson to Sky News in an recent interview. "And I think Darren has tried to be very sensitive, he has tried to be very mindful. He didn't take the task lightly, it's a very inclusive piece and I think it is very true to the spirit and the themes of the biblical story."
The 23-year-old actress also expressed her viewpoint on faith in the interview.
"I already, before I did the movie, I had a sense that I was more spiritual than specifically religious. I had a sense that I believed in a Higher Power, but that I was more of a Universalist, that I saw - I see that there are these unifying tenets between so many religions, and I'm really interested in those things that are more far-reaching than culture, nationality, race, religion," said Watson to Sky News.
The film's leading man Russell Crowe also shared his thoughts in another interview regarding some of the negative reaction the film as received so far.
"A lot of people think they know the story but what they recall is children's stories from Sunday school and not what the Bible says," said Crowe to journalists in Brazil, according to a report by The Telegraph. "This story is contained in every religious text. Noah is in the Qu'ran. People from all over the world outside of religion have flood mythology," he continued. "In my eyes, Noah is just a normal man and, as he begins to realize the full weight of the task he's been given, it weighs down on him."
"Way of The Master" host Ray Comfort's ministry Living Waters will be releasing a new Noah movie this Friday, which is the same day Hollywood will release its translation of the same biblical story starring Crowe.
"Theirs is rightly billed as 'fiction' -- with Noah being painted as an evil character," said Comfort in a press release. "Ours is based on the truth of Holy Scripture."
Darren Aronofsky's film version of "Noah" will appear in movie theaters on March 28, 2014.
