Nintendo ‘Quality Sleep’ Device: Japanese Video Game Maker to Develop Device to Track Sleep, Exhaustion

Nintento Co Ltd, the Japanese video game developer, will develop a health tracking device that will determine the user's fatigue and their sleep patterns. According to Nintendo Chief Executive Satoru Iwata, this will be the first offering from the company's newly established healthcare division.

Iwata also mentioned that they will develop the new device with the U.S. firm ResMed Inc, which is currently dedicated to manufacturing products for treating sleep disorders. The new device will be available in the market anytime during the financial year ending on March 31, 2016.

Substantiating the company's decision to develop the device, Iwata said, "By using our know-how in gaming... to analyse sleep and fatigue, we can create something fun."

Popular for its Mario video game franchise as well as Wii and Wii U consoles, Nintendo is hopeful that its healthcare division will be turning a profit in 2015/2016. Currently, Nintendo offers fitness games on its Wii console, which can be played using a motion sensor controller.

During a recently organized press conference, Iwata also shared an image of the device, which will roughly be the size of a hand and be placed on the bedside table of the user. Using microwave transmission sensors, the device will track sleep, and the data collected by the device will help users develop healthy sleeping habits.

Iwata, however, refused to discuss the sales expectations of the company for the new device, saying that it may be offered through a subscription service, instead of a one time purchase.

Iwata said, "We only start something new if we think we will be able to create a big market, but as I'm not able to discuss pricing plans and other details today I don't think there's much point in giving a figure for our projected scale."
