Nintendo Characters Turned Gay in Parody Video After LGBT Activists Bash Company For Being 'Behind the Times' in Tomodachi Life Game (VIDEO)
Nintendo recently came under fire for not including gay relationships in their new Tomodachi Life game, and HBO host of "Last Week Tonight" John Oliver created a video of gay Nintendo characters to poke fun of the decision.
Tomodachi Life is a 3DS simulation game that has characters going through day to day life much like the Sims. Within the game there is dating and marriage, but same-sex relationships are not an option. Initially the game was released in Japan last year, and this version did not offer it either.
According to Polygon, LGBT group GLAAD spoke out against Nintendo and said they were "behind the times." Nintendo has since apologized and said they would include the option in future versions of the game.
"At Nintendo, dedication has always meant going beyond the games to promote a sense of community, and to share a spirit of fun and joy. We are committed to advancing our longtime company values of fun and entertainment for everyone," the company said in a statement. "We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players."
After Nintendo said they would strive to be equal in future incarnations of the game, comedian Oliver took advantage of this and showed a video featuring prominent Nintendo icons such as Mario, Link, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, and others and placed them in homosexual relationships. The video showed Mario and Link locking lips along with Princess Peach and Princess Zelda. Yoshi and Toad were married at the alter, and Bowser was seen receiving married couple death benefits with Donkey Kong.
Oliver even quipped that before Nintendo had to offer a Civil Union cheat code. "If you're interested, it's up, up, down, down, B, gay, B, gay, start."
Video games for the most part take a neutral stance on gay marriage and stick to traditional views for the most part. In recent years games have included gay characters as part of the storyline.
