Nichelle Nichols News: 'Star Trek' Actress Suffers Mild Stroke

Actress Nichelle Nichols, of Star Trek fame, has been admitted to the hospital after suffering a mild stroke.

The 82 year old actress, who portrayed the communications officer, Lieutenant Uhura on the USS Enterprise in the Star Trek television series from 1966 to 1969 became ill on the evening of Wednesday, June 3rd.

Shortly after she became ill, she was taken by an ambulance from her home in Woodland Hills, California.

According to a statement made by Zach McGinnis of Galactic Productions, Nichols suffered from a mild stroke, while at her home in Los Angeles.

"While at her home in LA, Nichelle Nichols suffered from a mild stroke," stated McGinnis. "She is currently undergoing testing to determine how severe the stroke was. Please keep her in your thoughts."

During her time starring as Uhura on Star Trek, the actress shared television's first interracial kiss with her co-star, William Shatner, who played James T. Kirk.

In addition to her appearances in the television series, Nichols also starred in six Star Trek movies, the last of which was released in 1991.

Before she started her career on the small screen, Nichols worked as a singer for Duke Ellington, the jazz legend. She also worked for NASA for a time, where she helped them to recruit minorities and women.

Nichols has one son, named Kyle Johnson, and was married from 1967 to 1972 to Duke Mondy. Nichols' acting career continues to this day.

Recently she had a recurring role on the television series, Heroes, and she also will have roles in two upcoming films.

As it stands, the actress is conscious and recovering.
