NBA 2015 News: Adidas to Offer James Harden $200 Million

A year after Nike saw Under Armour try and pry one of its biggest stars in Kevin Durant with a $285 million offer, they're being forced to pony up a ton of cash once again as Adidas is reportedly set to make a $200 million offer for Houston Rockets star James Harden.

As reported by Darren Rovell of ESPN, Adidas has submitted a bid of $200 million over 13 years to sign Harden. Nike, who recently became the NBA's official apparel provider (a deal which reportedly cost them $1 billion), has until the end of next week to match the deal or lose Harden.

"We've invited James Harden to join Adidas," Adidas spokesman Michael Ehrlich said in a statement. "We're a brand of creators and he truly embodies what that means with his approach to the game, his look and his style on and off the court. He's coming off a historic season where he won the scoring title and was voted MVP by his peers. His connection with fans is unparalleled and unprecedented and he can take the game, our brand and the industry to new heights."

Ball Don't Lie points out that Adidas' offer to Harden could be a sign of a shifting marketplace for individual endorsers, with Nike spending a ton of money on the NBA apparel deal.

"2017-18 begins Nike's $1b contract with the NBA. Free's up money for Adidas to land High-level NBA players," league observer Bobby Marks tweeted.

To put the Adidas offer to Harden in perspective, the company previously signed Derrick Rose to a $185 million contract back in 2012. Nike gave Durant a reported $300 million for the former MVP to stay with them, while Damian Lillard signed what was reportedly the third-most lucrative shoe deal back in 2014.

As a side note, Nike lost out on league MVP Steph Curry, when it offered him a deal worth $2.5 million a year. Curry signed on with Under Armour for just less than $4 million a year.
