Nexus 8, Nexus 9, HTC Volantis Release Date Rumors: Upcoming Tablet to Run Android L, Launch 2014 Q4

It has finally been confirmed that Google's upcoming Nexus 8 tablet will be running on the upcoming and highly-anticipated Android L operating system.

In fact, latest reports say that Google is working on the upcoming Nexus tablet, which is currently known by a number of names, including the Nexus 8, Nexus 9, HTC Volantis, and HTC Flounder.

The Nexus 8 name was given by developers in Germany, who discovered it via the Chromium Code Review. On the other hand, the tablet is also being referred to as the Nexus 9 as it will have a 8.9-inch screen.

Recently Droid Life revealed that the Wi-Fi certificate through the Wi-Fi Alliance for the upcoming tablet, has been codenamed HTC Flounder or HTC Volantis. The certificate has confirmed that the device will run the Android L.

The model number of the product is 0P8210000 - corresponding to earlier leaks regarding the upcoming tablet. There are two other model numbers - 0P8220000 and 0P8230000, which may refer to the different color variants or maybe the storage options of the device.

TalkAndroid.com recently provided some specs of the Nexus 8. It's speculated to have an 8.9-inch, 2560 x 1600p display, a NVIDIA Logan 64-bit processor (Tegra K1), 2GB or 4GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel camera, and a 1.6 megapixel front camera, in addition to optional LTE (14.74/15.1 ounces).

The device will have an aluminum zero-gap body measuring 8.91"³ x 5.98"³ x 0.31"³ body (22.63 × 15.19 × 0.79cm). It will come with 16 GB/ 32 GB internal storage and stereo front-facing speakers.

Since, neither Google nor HTC have announced that they are currently working on a new Nexus tablet, there is no confirmation regarding its official release date as of yet. Normally, Nexus devices launch with the latest version of Android. The upcoming mobile OS of Google Android L has been speculated to be ready for launch sometime in October or November. Hence, it can be expected that the Nexus 8 may also be released in 2014 Q4.
