Nexus 6 Release Date: Made by Motorola? New Phablet Likely to be Released in November 2014

Following some confusion regarding Android Silver, Google has recently confirmed that it is totally committed to Nexus. Moreover, the Mountain View-headquartered tech titan has also backed up that the latest Nexus handset will be launched sometime during the second half of 2014, possibly November.

Now, the only question that remains, is who is actually manufacturing the device. In fact, LG has already denied that it has been assigned with OEM duties again, but it is a well-known fact that tech firms often resort to falsehood vis-à-vis upcoming projects and releases. For example, in May 2013, LG said that it was not manufacturing the Nexus 5, but that turned out otherwise.

It is also interesting to note that recently the name Motorola has also been included in the Nexus 6 saga. Two separate reports asserted that as LG is out of contention, Google has now engaged Motorola for OEM duties with a view to make a splash with its upcoming Nexus smartphone.

Leaked information suggests that Motorola is currently working on a handset codenamed "Shamu" with a 5.9-inch display. This phablet is said to become the much-awaited Nexus 6 and is likely to be released in the U.S. market in November. The information has been leaked via Spirent Communication, a tech firm devoted to testing upcoming phones for errors.

A report published by The Information regarding the leak says, "Motorola is also getting a boost from working on an undisclosed phone-tablet project with Google-the type of initiative which, ironically, it could not pursue as a Google subsidiary due to concerns about favoring the house-owned Android vendor over others."

It added, "After Lenovo agreed to buy Motorola, Google's Android unit began working with Motorola to develop a co-branded 'Nexus' phone that's considered to be a 'phablet,' or phone-tablet, because of its large screen size, according to three people with knowledge of the matter."

Pointing out Google's past obsession with naming its Nexus devices after fish, Ars Technica points out, "Nexus devices are always named after fish. The Nexus 5 is called 'Hammerhead', and the 2013 Nexus 7 is called 'Razor'. The devices discovered before I/O were 'Molly', which ended up being the Android TV developer kit, and 'Flounder', which hasn't surfaced yet but is believed to be a 4:3 Nexus tablet made by HTC."
