Newsboys' 'We Believe' Helps Prove Christian Music is Not 'Second Rate'; 'There's No Doubt...Who We Are, What We Stand For'

Newsboys drummer Duncan Phillips recently spoke on the stigma of Christian artists not being up to par with those in the mainstream. The 20 year music veteran believes the band's latest album Restart will put any of that talk to rest.

"Christian music is a funny thing. It is one of the only genres of music that is characterized by its lyrical content rather than its musical style. Sometimes because of that, the art of the music tends to be second rate. That tends to be not as important as the lyrical content. I get it, but I don't necessarily agree with it," he said to New Release Tuesday.

Phillips spoke on the importance it is for the music to be good because "the music is the conduit to get the message into the heart of a person, into their soul and their spirit." He feels if the point can not be made properly through the opportunity of music, the band has "failed."

Newsboys has been a band for just about 30 years, and in that time music has changed drastically. Even Christian music has evolved from so much more than hymns and worship tunes. Sometimes, as every Christian band out there experiences, certain songs are attacked for not being "Christian enough" or swaying too far from the message.

Proud of the bands' Restart album, Phillips pointed to the song "We Believe" as a definitive Christian anthem that leaves no doubts to the listener of what the band is all about.

"With this song, it lays it out straight. There's no doubt about who we are and what we stand for," he said to New Release Tuesday. "When I first heard this song, I started weeping. Someone has finally said it. Someone has finally said this is who we are as Christians. I don't want to get weird and say anyone who doesn't believe like me is going to hell. That's not the point of this song. At some point, we have to stand up and say this is who we are."

He continued, "Through Christ, we need to have joy and express what we stand for more than what we are against. With statements like this song, it is very positive and uplifting. This is the reason why I believe, because my God came for me. That's why I can stand and shout, not because of who I am, but because of who He is."

The song is powerful, and is as straight forward as as Phillips said. "We Believe" talks about people in their darkest places, having faith, and proclaiming the truths of Christianity.

"We believe in God the Father
We believe in Jesus Christ
We believe in the Holy Spirit
And He's given us new life
We believe in the crucifixion
We believe that He conquered death
We believe in the resurrection"
And He's comin' back again, we believe"

Restart is the 17th album over the band's almost 30 year career. This is their third with lead singer Michael Tait, who joined the band in 2009 after co-founder Peter Furler stepped down.

Phillips previously told The Christian Post that this album was the band's "best...ever penned and recorded."

"This generation has lost its heroes and people to look up to. As a band we want to reengage our culture and have a real positive effect," said Phillips to the Christian Post. "I think it's time that we jumped in not to be apart of it, knowing who we are and having courage to do the great commission."

The Newsboys have been a band since 1985 and released their first album, Read All About It, in 1988. They became a major Christian band in the early to mid-90s with their albums Going Public and Take Me to Your Leader. They are perhaps most known for their hit singles "Not Ashamed," "Shine," "Breakfast," "God's Not Dead," and many more. They have five Dove Awards and have been nominated for a Grammy four times.
