Newsboys 'Take Me to Your Leader' Review - Still a Classic Almost 20 Years Later (Throwback Thursday)
Nearly 20 years ago the Newsboys released their classic and ground breaking album Take Me to Your Leader, and in today's Throwback Thursday we are going to take a look back!
Way before Michael Tait was touring the country with the Boys' singing "God's Not Dead" he was singing the tunes of Jesus Freak in DC Talk. Meanwhile his current band, had two lead singers who were marching forward with a huge Christian album as well. Take Me to Your Leader featured the talents of first lead singer and frontman John James and former drummer turned lead singer Peter Furler.
The Newsboys had been around since 1985 and did not start making any real noise in Christian music until 1994's Going Public. Furler along with his writing partner Steve Taylor were at the peak of their songwriting careers. At this point James was sharing lead vocal duties with Furler who was also playing drums. Bassist Phil Joel began contributing vocally as well, and what came out of it was a powerful three singer attack that flowed with the great music coming from the band.
The album kicks off with the infectious "God Is Not a Secret" and then breaks into their smash hit "Take Me to Your Leader," which is also the title track. The lyrics are a little crazy, and the video is even weirder, but the song is one of the Newsboys' most catchy.

"Reality" spawned a movie from the band called "Down Under the Big Top" which features the Newsboys working at a circus and shooting a commercial.
"Breakfast" is perhaps one of the Newsboys' top songs of all time, especially with Furler as frontman. The song takes the novel idea of saying "they don't serve breakfast in hell," as one of the points of avoiding Hell. "When the toast is burned and all the milk's passed turned and Captain Crunch is waving farewell. When the big one finds you, let this song remind you that they don't serve breakfast in Hell." It sounds silly, but it is truly a remarkable song, and a lot of fun to see live.

"Lost the Plot" is another great song on the album. Furler is at his very best vocally. His vocals are powerful and sharp. The lyrics are deep, and his almost frantic-like vocals toward the end of the track are one of the most memorable things on the album.
The album was nominated at the Dove Awards for "Best Rock Album of the Year" and "Short Form Music Video of the Year" for "Take Me to Your Leader." It won for "Recorded Music Packaging of the Year." The album was also nominated for a Grammy as well.
According to CCM every track on the album except for "Miracle Child," charted on one of the Christian charts. This in itself is an incredible feat.
Of course after this album, James would depart from the band as he came to terms and battled with substance abuse and an unhealthy marriage. He has since recovered and has a powerful testimony to share. Furler got out from behind the kit and continued on with the band until 2009, leading them through a period of worship and more mature music. The follow up to Take me to Your Leader was the very successful Entertaining Angels.
Now the band is fronted by Tait and they continue to reach thousands of new fans with more upbeat pop rock style music. There most recent album Restart has blown up all over Christian radio and has helped the band garner some crossover support.
