The New York Knicks are continuing to fall out the playoff race. The Detroit Pistons are in a similar situation due to terrible performances lately by the team from the Motor City.

Tonight's meeting in Detroit could be a high-scoring event due to both teams' defensive woes.

New York (21-39) has lost six straight games while allowing 114.8 points per game and permitting opponents to shoot 49% from the field. The newest display of ineffectiveness occurred in a 109-90 defeat at Chicago on Sunday afternoon, which was also its 9th loss in the last 10 road contests.

The Knicks are six games behind Atlanta for the East's final playoff spot, and considering their current stretch, that margin appears even larger.

The return of defensive stalwart Iman Shumpert, who missed the previous five games due to a sprained left MCL, delivered little help. New York fell behind 37-16 after the first quarter.

"They came out with more energy than we did, took advantage of us," said Tyson Chandler, who grabbed 22 rebounds. "On the defensive end, backdoor cuts that pretty much changed the game."

The Knicks are also struggling offensively, averaging 91.7 points on 39.7 percent shooting over the last three games. Carmelo Anthony, dealing with a sore right hand he aggravated in Friday's 126-103 defeat to the Golden State Warriors, scored 21 against Chicago yesterday.
