Millions of people are expected to watch the world-famous Times Square ball drop on New Year's Eve on Dec. 31, 2013.

The 60-second descent of the sparkly ball will be activated on the strike of midnight by U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

A statement from a Times Square official reads: "We're excited to announce that Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will help lower the Times Square New Year's Eve Ball at 11:59pm on December 31st. A native of the Bronx, Justice Sotomayor was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009, and was the third woman and first Hispanic to be appointed to the highest court in the United States. She is an inspiration to New Yorkers everywhere, and we can't wait to have her join us."

The annual testing of the New Year's ball was held December 29 with the help of the New Year's Eve superhero, The Amazing Spiderman.

This year, the annual ball drop can be viewed live online via live stream here.

Tablet and smartphone users can also download an app to view the ball drop live. The Times Square Ball App is available both on the Google Play store and Apple iTunes store.

With the app, users can interact with the Times Square Ball on Twitter, watch live streaming of the Times Square New Year's celebration, and customize the countdown clock to your respective time zone.

Prior to the ball drop will be the annual New Year's Rockin' Eve party, hosted by Ryan Seacrest. The party will feature live performances from Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson and more.

The New Year's Rockin' Eve party will air on ABC from 10 p.m. ET and will also feature host Ryan Seacrest counting down to the new year.
