New Spider-Man News: Tom Holland Confirmed as New MCU Webslinger
It appears that the long-winded search for Marvel and Sony's new Spider-Man has come to a resounding close with the unanimous decision to cast actor Tom Holland in the role.
Holland beat out an impressive cast of contenders such as Asa Butterfield, Charlie Rowe and Matthew Lintz, however according to Sony Pictures chairman Holland give the studio a lasting impression.
"I've worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent," Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group chairman, said in a press release. "For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom's screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start."
The actor should be making his way to the set of 'Captain America: Civil War' to make his promised cameo in the film. He's to then follow up with his own solo film scheduled for July 28, 2017.
Furthermore, the studio also nailed down a director for the foreseeable Spider-Man film. 'Cop Car' director John Watts has been handpicked to helm the project.
"Over the last two weeks, the decision was made to cut the list down to Levine, Watts and Melfi for director, and Holland and Rowe for the role of Spider-Man. Sources did not reveal the exact reason why Sony and Marvel chose Holland but as for Watts sources are now saying over the past ten days Levine and Melfi became frustrated with the process and worried this may carry over to the production and pulled themselves out allowing Watts to move in and land the job," writes Variety.
Holland is expected to be featured in subsequent MCU films along with starring in his own solo movie franchise for the next couple years. The studios purposely casted the actor at this young age for this reason.
