New Mac OS X Release Date, News, Features: Yosemite OS Receives Makeover Fall 2014

OS X Yosemite, the next version of the Mac OS, which was unveiled at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on June 2, 2014, is highly-anticipated by many Mac users.

Eight separate developer previews and downloads followed the June unveiling of the new operating system, OS X 10.10. The company, in preparation for its public release, also asked the developers to submit Yosemite-compatible apps on the App Store.

Apple has not yet officially revealed the exact date for the awaited launch of Yosemite, however, it is speculated that the earnings call on Oct. 20 is a signal for the next-day availability of the upgrade for Mac OS. This is similar to what happened in 2011 and 2012, where Apple used the earnings call to announce the availability of OS X Lion and Mountain Lion, respectively.

The new OS now emphasizes translucency, has a revamped look, more features, and streamlined toolbars.

Some of the featured improvements seen on Apple's webpage are "Today" view in the Notification Center, which offers easier access to a wide variety of data, and "Spotlight search" which appears in the center as the user clicks and will provide the user with data sources. Basically, it acts as a search engine by pulling data from Wikipedia, as well as other websites.

The Yosemite upgrade also changes Safari, as it will now include an improved Nitro JavaScript engine, which makes it function even faster while being more efficient.

The newest OS also has "Mail Drop," which allows users to easily send and receive attachments up to 5GB in size via iCloud. Another feature is "Markup," which lets users make sketch-style marks to images and other attachments right from within the mail service.

The third-quarter earnings call of Apple will begin at 2:00 pm PT on Oct. 20. One of the awaited sales reports will be on the newest iPhone 6 which went on sale in the second half of the previous month. A live audio feed of the earnings call will also be accessible on Apple's official website.
