NBA 2015 Trade News: Pelicans & Spurs Lock Up All-Stars

This past season, the New Orleans Pelicans made the playoffs for the first time since Chris Paul left the franchise. And recently, they reached an agreement that would make them relevant in the league's foreseeable future as Yahoo Sports reports that they've reached an agreement to lock up Anthony Davis to a five-year deal.

Citing a league source, the report says the contract could be worth in excess of $145 million, with a player option after the fourth year. As noted by Adrian Wojnarowski, Davis and his agent, Thad Foucher of Wasserman Media Group, met with Pelicans general manager Dell Demps and new head coach Alvin Gentry on Wednesday and reached an agreement after midnight.

Davis averaged 24.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game this past season on his way to leading the Pelicans to the playoffs and finishing fifth in the league's MVP voting. He is widely regarded as the league's next superstar after LeBron James and Kevin Durant. He only just turned 22.

Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs have reportedly reached an agreement with their own star, as league sources have told Yahoo Sports that Kawhi Leonard has agreed to a five-year deal that could be worth in excess of $90 million.

"I have every intention of signing with the San Antonio Spurs. There are details in the contract, which need to be worked out with the organization. I am confident this will be accomplished," Leonard said in a statement.

As noted by the Yahoo Sports report, Spurs officials reached out to Leonard's agents, Brian Elfus and Mitch Frankel of Impact Sports, shortly after midnight Wednesday, and soon reached an agreement on principle. Details of the contract are expected to be worked out in the next several days.

The 24-year-old Leonard was the 2014 NBA Finals MVP, and was awarded the 2014-15 Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged 16.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game last season.
