'Modern Family' Season Finale Tonight of ABC's Best Comedy, Phil Has a Great Tragedy
America's best comedy is back tonight with the season finale of "Modern Family" on ABC.
The episode centers around the loss of Phil Dunphy's (Ty Burrell) Mother and whole Pritchett-Dunphy families trip to Florida to attend her funeral.
"We're always looking for an interesting way to wrap up the season, and it felt just like what we get to deal with a real-life issue, something that felt a little more substantial than the normal kind of stuff," executive producer Steve Levitan tells TVGuide.com. "At the same time, we want to make sure everybody knows it's a very funny episode. It's very touching, but it's also very funny. We're very happy with it."
Phil and Alex will both be on missions to fulfill promises they had made to their mother and grandmother in the episode. "It's a rather unusual mission, so there's lots of comedy to be had," Levitan says. "We don't want people to think, 'Here is that very special episode of Modern Family.'" The mission will involve the returning of Fred Willard as Phil's father.
Alex has been left a gift from her grandmother and cannot figure it out. She has always thought to be closest to her grandmother so she makes it her mission to figure out what this means.
On the Pritchett side of the family, Gloria (Sofia Vergara) has an outstanding warrant in Florida, Jay (Ed O'Neill) runs into a woman he had a fling with back in his prime, Cam (Eric Stonestreet) gets caught up with a gang of gossiping older women, and Manny (Rico Rodriguez) enjoys the easy going culture in Florida. "It suits his personality and temperament," Levitan says.
Make sure to watch the season finale of "Modern Family" tonight on ABC at 9/8 CST.
