Minnesota Timberwolves NBA 2015 News: Andrew Wiggins Named Kia Rookie of the Year
Canadian Andrew Wiggins came into the league with a ton of expectations, following his stint as one of the most hyped high school players since LeBron James, succeeded by a relative underwhelming year in Kansas. In his first year in the NBA, he appears as good as advertised as he was named Kia NBA Rookie of the Year.
Wiggins received 100 of 130 first place votes, taking away the award in a landslide. The Chicago Bulls' Nikola Mirotic came in second with 14 first place votes. The 20-year-old becomes the first Minnesota Timberwolves player to win Rookie of the Year.
"It means a lot to me. I know it means a lot to the organization and there's a whole lot of history," Wiggins said. "It should bring a lot of hope for the future of the Minnesota Timberwolves. It should give people a different look at things. This is the uprising. We've got a lot of young talent."
Wiggins was the only rookie, and just one of 11 players in the entire league to start in all 82 games. He averaged a rookie-best 16.9 points, along with 4.6 rebounds (fifth among rookies), and 1.05 steals (fourth).
Wiggins was picked first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2014 Draft. He was supposed to star alongside the arguably best player in the world, Lebron James, but was shipped to Minnesota in the deal that brought Kevin Love to Cleveland.
"When I first came here a couple of years ago, I met with [owner Glen Taylor] and said the No. 1 thing we had to do to build a franchise and develop that culture was to get a game-changing type of player," Timberwolves coach and team president Flip Saunders said. "A player that was a two-way type player that could play offense, could play defense. Last year, Aug. 23, when we traded for Andrew Wiggins, we got that type of player. And we were ready, set and go."
After a relative slow start in his initial NBA campaign, Wiggins averaged 19.1 points since 2015 began, and normed 23.3 points and 3.5 assists, while taking 10 free throws per game in his last 13 games.
