'Minecraft 2' News & Rumors: Sequel Not Coming Anytime Soon, Says Mojang Chief
Those expecting a sequel to 'Minecraft' would be disappointed to learn that it will not happen any time soon. Speaking to Gamespot recently, Mojang CEO Jonas Martensson opined that the current 'Minecraft' game can last till 2020.
Latin Post quotes Martensson saying, "First of all, there's been no discussion about Minecraft 2 at the moment. I can't promise forever there'll never be a Minecraft 2, but for the foreseeable future there won't be."
Meanwhile, Xbox boss Phil Spencer also echoed the same opinion as Martennsson. In 2014, Microsoft acquired the Swedish gaming developer Mojang for $2.5 billion.
According to Spencer, "I don't know if 'Minecraft 2,' if that's the thing that makes the most sense. The community around Minecraft is as strong as any community out there," adding, "We need to meet the needs and the desires of what the community has before we get permission to go off and do something else."
Spencer further said, "It doesn't mean that everything we're going to do is going to map to 100 percent of their acceptance, because I don't know if there is any topic where 100 percent of people agree. But we look at Job 1 is to go out and meet the needs of the Minecraft community first, and then we can think about ways that we can actually help it grow. That's our sole focus."
Therefore, instead of a sequel to 'Minecraft,' developers will keep updating the current game with new content. At the same time, they will include the occasional bug fixes. Of late, Minecraft announced that it has distributed a free map of Northern Ireland to schools. According to the Redmond tech giant, the game can be used in the form of an educational tool for children across the country.
Meanwhile, the hugely game will be made into a movie in 2017. Rob McElhenny, who was at the help of 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia,' will be directing the Minecraft movie.
Currently, a new Minecraft video game series called 'Minecraft: Story Mode' is in the works. Telltale Games, which developed 'The Walking Dead' and 'Game Of Thrones' video game series, will be producing the spin-off next year.
