Miley Cyrus Wrecking Ball Performance at NYC Times Square New Year 2014 (VIDEO): Singer Performs 'Modestly', Asks for Prayers in New Year's Eve 2013 Celebration
Pop star Miley Cyrus has been the center of tabloid attention for most of 2013, and gained a slot performing for Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2013. However, the singer, increasingly known for her controversial performances, surprised many by covering up for her New Year performance. Cyrus also asked for prayers from fans as she was ill, yet despite the illness she stunned the nation with a compelling performance of her biggest song of the year, "Wrecking Ball."
An estimated crowd of 1 million people gathered in New York's Times Square last night as they rang in New Year 2014. The millions ushered in 2014 along with the television special, Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2014, hosted by Ryan Seacrest as millions watched around the world.
Miley Cyrus' infamous VMA's performance was one of the most talked about occurrences of 2013. Barbara Walters' named the 21-year-old one of the most fascinating people.
"I'm ending [2013] modestly," Cyrus told host Ryan Seacrest at the Celebration.
She went on to say to the host that her outfit that night was "the most clothes I've been in, in 2013," and hinted that she would have worn much less, if not for the below freezing temperatures.
Despite the provoking deposition Cyrus had for most of 2013, the pop singer seemed humbled by the opportunity to perform before a million partygoers in Times Square as well as millions watching online and on TV across the globe.
"I'm a little nervous tonight, I can't believe a billion people are going to watch this, this is a big moment for me," Cyrus told Seacrest.
The temperature dropped below freezing weather in the streets of New York, and in addition to nerves, the singer tweeted her fans that she was fighting a cold.
"This cough/cold is not a good combo. Please keep praying for me. If I can just get thru tonight I can have a nice lil break," Miley tweeted earlier in the day.
The singer was dressed in a fur coat and gold sequin suit bearing nothing but her midriff. The outfit was certainly a change for the singer since she spent most of 2013 in fashions that appeared as under garments.
Cyrus opened up the performance with a slightly pitchy rendition of a newer song "#Geitright" and despite her being covered up more than her norm, she stayed true to her raunchy persona by dancing suggestively with her backup dancer a "lil person."
Then came the heartfelt rendition of her hit single "Wrecking Ball" in which the crowd sang along. Looks like her request for prayers prompted her fans to pray because she did a great job and did not have to radically offend anyone in the process.
