Miguel Cotto Next Fight: Puerto Rican Undecided Over Whom to Fight Next, But Wants to Face Canelo, Chavez Jr
Currently, the 33-year-old Puerto Rican professional boxer and WBC middleweight title holder Miguel Cotto is on a vacation. However, when he returns from his retreat, he will need to sit down and decide who he wants to face in his next fight scheduled for Dec. 6.
Although Cotto has expressed his wish to fight both Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. when he returns to the ring, it is not clear yet whether Cotto will be defending his WBC middleweight title during his next fight.
In case, Cotto decides to face Chavez Jr in his next bout, it would then appear very unlikely that the fight will be at middleweight, as at this point of his career, Chavez Jr cannot make weight for a division. However, anything is possible if the money is lucrative enough.
Recently Cotto told ESPN Deportes, "I'm enjoying my last victory and most of all waiting to see what happens in my career." He went on to add, "There are many possible names, such as Canelo and Chavez, but there again, we are still waiting. This is business. We will ensure the best option for Miguel Cotto. But it is a fact that the Mexico-Puerto Rican rivalry can be rekindled."
If Cotto decides to go for lots of money, he has three options - to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr, Chavez Jr or Canelo. He can even choose to fight WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, but that would mean a great loss to him, as Cotto might get routed by Golovkin and also not get as much money as he may expect to earn from a fight against Mayweather, Chavez Jr or Canelo.
In case Cotto decides to fight Canelo in December, he has to tell TopRank boss Bob Arum about it, as Arum seems to be inclined to have a Cotto-Canelo fight on the Mexican holiday Cinto de Mayo in May 2015. In fact, it would be wise for Cotto to wait until May to fight Canelo, as facing him in December would mean a lesser payday for the Puerto Rican boxer.
Nevertheless, the prospects of Cotto taking on a soft opponent in December are high, as it would not disturb his plans to face Canelo in May, provided he wishes to move in this direction. Cotto can manage a win against Canelo, because the latter has been exposed thrice during his last four bouts against Austin Trout, Mayweather and Erislandy Lara.
