Microsoft Windows 8 Upgrade / 'Windows Blue' First Look, 2013 Release Date / New 7, 8-inch Windows 8 Tablet on the Way [VIDEO]

After successfully launching Windows 8 back in October, Microsoft has sold over 100 million units of its newest operating system. That's not good enough for Bill Gates and Co. Microsoft is going back to the drawing board for a user-friendlier version. The code named "Windows Blue" could be out as early as June but no later than the end of 2013.

Despite the 100 million licenses sold, Microsoft has been under a lot of criticism for Windows 8, even though its on pace to sell as much as the highly praised Microsoft 7.

"Windows 8 is a big, ambitious change," says Microsoft CMO and CFO Tami Reller. "While we realize that change takes time, we feel good about the progress since launch, including what we've been able to accomplish with the ecosystem and customer reaction to the new PCs and tablets that are available now or will soon come to market."

Windows 8, "Windows Blue" is expected to improve battery life, and performance and also provide a more intuitive experience in response to PC users that can can't match the learning curve for the new "tile" based home screen. Windows 8.1 is even expected to feature the classic "start" button for more traditional PC users.

"We've considered a lot of different scenarios to help traditional PC users move forward, as well as making usability that much better on all devices," Reller said.

Microsoft is also expected to reassert themselves in the tablet market, possibly creating a more affordable Windows 8 tablet [7 and 8 inch displays] to compete with the Apple iPad Mini, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Google Nexus and Amazon Kindle Fire. Pictures of the Acer Iconia [8.1-inch display] were recently leaked online by Amazon.
