Michael W. Smith's 'Sovereign' was Birthed From Columbine Shootings, 'I Never Want to Neglect or Forget' Experience (VIDEO)

Michael W. Smith recently wrote an editorial for Time.com where he shared his unlikely inspiration for new worship album Sovereign was the Columbine shootings.

Smith shared that he often takes inspiration from what is going on in the world around him when creating music. He wrote that while working on his newest record he thought back to that fateful day on April 20 1999.

"I remember sitting in front of the TV screen - staring in disbelief at blurry images of high school kids jumping from windows, running from their school with their hands held over their heads as though in a war zone. Distraught parents were held back by police, not knowing if their kids were dead or alive. Confusion only escalated as news media swarmed the area," he stated.

He then recalled how he and Amy Grant were contacted by Governor Bill Owens to sing at a memorial service, which was an experience he never had before. Smith said this tragedy "forever fed my passion to reach out to kids who so desperately need our help."

Because of this awful event, Smith began Rocketown, a place in Nashville where teenagers could come together and not have to worry about being bullied or out of place.

"Rocketown has become a place that provides common ground for the outsiders-the troubled and misunderstood kids"”as well as student leaders. It's a place to matter, to receive the love, attention, and encouragement of a staff that truly has a heart for kids-all kids," he wrote on Times.com.

Smith wrote that Rocketown is a huge space with a concert hall, skate park, coffee bar, dance studio, recording studio, and more. They encourage kids from all walks of life and draw no "lines of separation."

"Lives are being changed there, one kid at a time. Hopeless kids begin to dream about what their lives can be. Shy kids find a safe place to open up and learn to build relationships. Kids who feel worthless are opened up to the truth that they are 'fearfully and wonderfully made' by God, that they can have 'a hope and a future,' he continued.

Smith's Rocketown has encouraged hundreds and maybe even thousand of lives. Sometimes inspiration can come from the most unlikely of places, and in this instance Smith was able to draw praise out of tragedy.
