Michael Schumacher Condition Latest News: F1 Ex-Champ Still in Rehab, Medical Records Stolen
More bad news for seven-time world Formula One Champion Michael Schumacher, as his medical records were either hacked or stolen and put up for sale; all while he continues to undergo physical rehabilitation.
The 45-year-old Schumacher was reported to have left the Grenoble Hospital, in France, one week ago to enter a rehabilitation program at a Swiss medical center.
Recent reports indicate that Schumacher's medical files were stolen and put up for sale by the alleged theives for £40,000. The files contained a list of Schumacher's treatments and his progress at Grenoble after he was airlifted there on December 29, following a skiing accident in the French resort of Meribel.
The French police are investigating the incident and had this to say on the matter, "The perpetrator or perpetrators of the theft contacted some French, Swiss and German journalists. An individual, communicating by email, is asking for 60,000 Swiss francs (49,000 euros, $67,000) to provide a document of several dozen pages that summarises everything that happened at Grenoble during Michael Schumacher's hospitalisation," Grenoble prosecutor Jean-Yves Coquillat told AFP.
The hospital and its computer system is also under investigation to determine whether the files were stolen electronically or not. The case has been lodged as theft and violation of medical confidentiality.
Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm is very frustrated with the incident and expressed her disgust in her recent appeal to the press directing them to keep the contents of the alleged documents private, "As you can imagine we are horrified and disgusted. We cannot judge if these documents are authentic. However, the documents are clearly stolen. We expressly advise that both the purchase and the publication of such documents and data are forbidden. The contents of any medical files are totally private and confidential," she said.
