Michael Schumacher Coma Condition Update Latest: F1 Champion Awake, Starting Rehab
Former F1 champion Michael Schumacher is officially out of his coma and has been transferred to Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland for continued rehabilitation. According to the family's representatives, the 45-year-old left Grenoble, France on Monday.
Schumacher was placed in a medically induced coma after suffering severe head trauma after a skiing accident in the French Alps on December 29.
Medical details about the Formula 1 legend were kept private from the public, though manager Sabine Kehm stated in previous interviews that Schumacher has been showing signs of positive development.
According to a CNN report, Kehm said that Schumacher is on his way to the rehabilitation center where he will be under observation until his full recovery. "The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes," Kehm added, "We are sure it helped him. For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye."
However, University of Oxford neurology professor Tipu Aziz commented that though the Formula 1 champion is already out of harm's way, it is unlikely that he will achieve absolute recovery. "The fact he was in a coma for so long. We can assume that he has had quite a bad injury. People don't tend to make a full recovery from that sort of injury," Aziz said.
Dr. Ganesh Bavikatte, consultant and lead physician at The Walton Center in Liverpool, agreed in an official statement, that the rehabilitation phase is going to be long one.
"We are not talking about recovery in days and weeks, but months and years. But there are hopeful signs. He is physically fit, he is relatively young and I assume that he did not have many pre-existing medical conditions," Bavikatte explained.
