Michael Gungor Explains Controversial Blog and its Subsequent Backlash on Bad Christian Podcast Interview (LISTEN HERE)
"Apostate," "heretic," "you're going to Hell!" are just some of the things singer Michael Gungor has heard after revealing some of his beliefs about what is literal and what is not, in the Bible. Gungor appeared on the Bad Christian Podcast on Sunday to talk about his old blog post that hit the viral circuit last week and some of the more "important" and pressing issues going on in his life.
He feels some of the stories in the book of Genesis are not literal translations of the Bible, but rather allegories. He targeted the Flood story, and used science to back his belief that Noah and his ark are entirely impossible and an improbable series of events. He also stated he did not believe in Creation in the sense of Adam and Eve being the first two people.
However, Gungor said he has always been open about everything, and nothing is new. In fact the blog post is from February. Since this post has been making waves he has heard all sorts of horrible things.
"The worst place in hell is not reserved for the gay people, it's reserved for people like you who twist scriptures," Gungor said to the BCP guys, to which he humorously responded, "How'd you get hell's seating chart?"
Gungor said he and his wife Lisa, love Jesus, and know Him as the Son of God. Essentially Gungor believes the Apostle's Creed. However, it is his views toward fundamental Old Testament stories that gets him in trouble with most groups of Christians.
He said he is not hurt, but just hopeful that the "darker" side of religion and fundamentalism could be ended because of the fear aspect involved in its practices.
He said the Apostle's Creed states "we believe, not we know," and feels the enlightenment of people is progress to understand more. It is a conversation that needs to happen, and can be positive rather than feared. People believe in the Bible, but Jesus is the answer he said.
Gungor is currently in the midst of a trial in his life. His three month old daughter has down syndrome and is going in to get her second heart surgery. They are also dealing with the death of a good family friend who passed the day before the podcast. To make matters worse, they were left homeless after a buyer backed out of buying their house. They the movers had already taken away all their stuff, and they couldn't move until they sold the house.
The only true thing missing from this podcast was enough of an explanation. Gungor did not delve into his actual beliefs that caused the controversy at all. It seemed that eventually BCP would get there, but the singer mentioning the rough patch in his life kind of distracted the point, and by that time, the show was over
However, perhaps Bad Christian's Facebook post about the whole issue hit the nail of the head, which seems to be the reoccurring theme in their last few podcasts and blog posts. People that are put on a pedestal or are considered heroes, do not get a break from having a minute of "realness."
"The church gets pissed when their heroes openly process their struggles because then, they aren't dependable as heroes. But they get MADDER and bitter when they fall into sin out of no where, which will MORE likely happen in secret than in public. Take your dang pick. Every one keep your eyes on Jesus. Everyone be more open. Let's move on as a people of Jesus and not a stupid, fickle, 'eat your own,' celebrity culture," they wrote.
