Miami Beach Bowl 2014 News: Memphis Tigers vs BYU Cougars Ends in Shameful Fight

This year's Miami Beach Bowl proved to be quite the riveting game as it was extended into double-overtime, but what happened afterwards is what's truly making headlines. The game between the Memphis Tigers and the BYU Cougars ended with a brawl between players, and subsequently shame on both ends.

Memphis fans rejoiced as Memphis cornerback DaShaughn Terry stopped off a pass from the opposing team's Christian Stewart. In their excitement, the Memphis team trampled over BYU players to celebrate the 55-48 win with DaShaughn. Shortly after the final whistle blew, a massive fight broke out.

Leaders on both sides have expressed their disappointment publicly. Justin Fuente, the coach of the Memphis team, told the media that he was ashamed with what happened post-game. "I don't know really what happened, but I don't want us to be involved in that kind of stuff," Justin said. He added that he wants to teach his team how to handle success and "act the right way."

Memphis athletic director Tom Bowen will review the video footage of the fight with Justin Fuente to determine the key instigators, and "appropriate disciplinary measures" will be issued to the athletes. Fuente wants to emphasize that the fight was not representative of the Memphis program.

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe has also made his feelings known about the incident through Twitter. He wrote, "We expect better of our athletes, even in the face of a difficult loss. We intend to fully review this matter. I apologize to Cougar nation."

"You want them to rise above that and have fantastic sportsmanship," BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said. BYU is not subject to any punishment as it does not belong to a conference, but the department may punish individual players on the team.
