Merida from "Brave" Makeover: Is Disney "Sexing Her Up" for 11th Princess Celebration? Director Brenda Chapman Thinks So / Disney: New Look "Temporary"

Do you like Disney princesses? Do you like Merida from "Brave"? Well great news for you, Disney just announced the spunky archer, Merida would be the latest character inducted into their "princess collection."

Great Disney giving young girls a strong, independent role model for a change instead of relying on antiquated standards of beauty.

Wrong.

Originally, Disney felt the need to give Merida a makeover. "Brave" director Brenda Chapman accused Disney of "sexing her [Merida] up."

"As far as the Disney makeover, I was incredibly disappointed and frustrated, but not surprised," Chapman tells Comic Riffs. "I do hope that Disney will correct it... They have taken the images off of their Web site here in the States, but they are still up in other countries... so I'm dubious."

Over 200,000 "Brave" fans took Facebook to sign a petition called, "Say No to the Merida Makeover."

In response Disney claims Merida's new look is only temporary. They maintain Merida still has the same spirit and will, but becoming the 11th Disney princess is cause for celebration, one you should dress up for.

"For a wedding or prom, even a tomboy is going to dress up for a special occasion," according to a statement released this morning. "We routinely use different art styles with our characters and this rendition of Merida in her party dress was a special one-time effort to commemorate her coronation.

What do you think of Merida's new look? Does it send the wrong message to young girls who looked up to the brave, confident Merida from "Brave"?
