Mentalist Season 7 Premiere Date: CBS Renews Show, Release Date Has Not Been Confirmed Yet

Despite struggling on Saturday nights in the ratings, "The Mentalist," the long-running television drama on CBS starring Simon Baker, has been renewed for a seventh season. However, CBS is yet to announce the premiere date of the new season.

Bruno Heller, creator of "The Mentalist," is changing gears for his new Fox series "Gotham," but before that he will see his baby off, sharing his duties with Tom Szentgyorgyi. In addition, Simon Baker is also set to return, as he still has another year on his current contract.

The renewal of "The Mentalist" ensures that CBS will be bringing back all 10 drama series that were on its fall schedule over the recent season, in addition to 6 new ones and 3 from the last season. Viewers may expect several split windows/ limited runs and perhaps dramas retrieving a comedy hour.

The story of this television drama revolves around Baker, who portrays the character of Patrick Jane, a consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation, and later the FBI. Jane uses the skills he learned as a "psychic" to facilitate his criminal investigations. In fact, most part of this series is based on Patrick Jane's mission to locate Red John, the serial killer who exterminated his family.

Fans of "The Mentalist" were quite concerned about the future of the series following the revelation of Red John's identity earlier in season six. Many speculated that if CBS refused to renew the series whether the producers Warner Bros. TV would find a new channel for "The Mentalist," which is currently syndicated on TNT.

Although the series fared lower than hoped in the ratings, this season it received a creative reboot, which shifted the setting of the show from Sacramento to Austin, Texas, after the death of Red John.

In addition to Baker, Robin Tunney and Tim Kang also feature in the series, which witnessed the departure of its original cast like Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman in the sixth season.
