Matt Redman, Lecrae, Mary Mary: Grammy Award Winning Christian Artists [UPDATE]
It was a good night for legendary Christian singer/songwriter Matt Redman at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards Sunday night. He led the Christian categories, nabbing "Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Performance" for his hit "10,000 Reasons" off his recently released album of the same name. Though nominated before these are the first two wins for Redman.
Cross-cultural Christian music artist Israel Houghton tied Redman's "10,000 Reasons" for "Best Contemporary Christian Music Song" with his "Your Presence Is Heaven" off Jesus at the Center: Live that Houghton released last August. Including this year's awards Houghton has won six Grammys total.
For the last twenty years hip-hop has been one of the most popular styles of music with youth. It's fitting that this year Lecrae was the first Christian hip-hop musician to win a Grammy. His recently released album Gravity won "Best Gospel Album".
Lecrae tweeted after winning the award: "Just won a Grammy. I dedicate it all to the Unashamed fam all over the planet. 1.1.Six-To God be the Glory."
"Reach Records" released Gravity and is co-owned by Lecrae.
"Best Gospel Song" went to the sister duo Erica Atkins-Campbell and Trecina "Tina" Atkins-Campbell, otherwise known as Mary Mary, for their 2012 hit "Go Get It". The duo is known for their influence on urban contemporary gospel in the new millennium. Influential contemporaries include artists such as Kirk Franklin.
