Marvel Movie Update & Cast News: New Upcoming Films Announced- 'Doctor Strange', 'Black Panther', 'Captain Marvel'
Marvel has officially introduced new additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Doctor Strange, Black Panther and the first female superhero to be given her own film, Captain Marvel.
The Walt Disney Co.-owned studio announced a series of eight superhero films slated to premiere the coming years at a fan event including 'Doctor Strange', who is an egotistic neurosurgeon turned Sorcerer Supreme, who protects the Earth from magical and mystical villains like Baron Mordo, Shuma-Gorath, Dormammu and Nightmare.
Rumors sprouted that Doctor Strange will be played by Ethan Hawke or, more recently rumored, British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, but Marvel hasn't revealed the casting for the film as of yet.
"If casting were confirmed, we would have introduced him today. Every single actor of a certain age has been rumored to be Doctor Strange," Marvel Studio president Kevin Fiege explained.
Another movie slated to premiere in July 2018 under Marvel's wide portfolio of superhero movies is 'Captain Marvel', the alter-ego of a character named Carol Danvers.
While Marvel already has a slew of female superheroes like Black Widow (portrayed by Scarlett Johansson), 'Captain Marvel' will be the first time a woman anchors a film as the lead.
On that note, Feige revealed that Black Widow would not have a stand-alone film, but the character would be seen in other Marvel films.
"Her part in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' is very very big and further develops and further enhances her character. The plans we have for her throughout the rest of the 'Avengers' saga is very very big," said Feige.
Meanwhile, Black Panther, the first black superhero featured in Marvel and the alter ego of T'Challa, is set to hit the big screen in 2017 and will star '42' actor Chadwick Boseman.
Boseman will also take on the role of Black Panther in 'Captain America: Civil War'.
Other Marvel films slated to premiere are 'Thor: Ragnarok' which will arrive in July 2017 and 'Avengers: Infinity War' which will reportedly be divided into two parts, with the first part released in May 2018 and the second released a year after in May 2019.
