Mark Burnett The Bible Mini-Series Sequel Coming to NBC in 2015
The producer of hit reality show Survivor and The Bible, Mark Burnett discussed why NBC will be unveiling the sequel to The Bible miniseries, A.D.: Beyond the Bible.
Burnett along with his wife, actress Roma Downey, will be producing A.D.: Beyond the Bible as a sequel to their immensely popular miniseries, which originally broadcasted on the History Channel Spring 2013.
"We are firmly in the 'event' business and nothing has more event potential than A.D. as it continues immediately after the The Bible ended," NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said.
The new NBC series is expected to air in the spring of 2015, and will take place during the start of the early church era of the Bible, Acts.
"You've got parts of the Bible," said Burnett to TV Guide Magazine when questioned on what would be be used as the core material for A.D., which is currently the title. "Josephus was Jewish and wrote one of the most incredible historical documents [in the first century]. There's also great archeology and a lot of writing to mine."
According to NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke's statement, the early scenes will show what was first seen in the History Channel mini-series as the direct result of Jesus' crucifixion.
"Everyone's lives were completely altered in an instant and the immediate aftermath of Christ's death had an impact on His disciples, His mother Mary, and key political and religious leaders of the time. In the first episode alone you see the last moments of the Crucifixion, Judas taking his own life after betraying Christ, Peter denying Jesus three times, and then the miracle of the Resurrection," said Salke.
Burnett warns viewers some imaginary characters and features in the new series.
"Much the way HBO's Rome did. With the spirit of history. Clearly A.D. is not predominantly Bible stories. This goes beyond that. But we spoke to all our advisers and our huge network, NBC, and they can't wait for this," said Burnett in the TV Guide Magazine.
Burnett also produces NBC's The Voice, and explained why he chose the network to broadcast his next series.
"I chose NBC because I believe they could turn this into an enormous event," said Burnett in the TV Guide Magazine's article. "This is more than TV for us. When you have the amount of passion that Roma and I have for a subject, you're willing to do anything it takes to launch and make it happen."
This will not be the only Christian-themed media released in the near future by Burnett and Downey; they are also planning to release a new film based on Jesus called, Son of God on February 28.
