Mark Burnett Says New 'AD: Beyond the Bible' Show Could Be 'Biggest Series in Many, Many Years' On the NBC Network (VIDEO)
In a new interview, The Bible and Survivor creator Mark Burnett and his wife/actress Roma Downey, talked about their upcoming A.D.: Beyond the Bible series and its potential success on the NBC network.
"These disciples, after Jesus dies and resurrects, the Holy Spirit comes upon them and there is only one way for them-that's spreading the good news of Jesus," said Burnett to Forbes Magazine, "What a drama. At some level it's Game of Thrones, House of Cards. ... This could become NBC's biggest series in many, many years." Even if it's not, part of the biblical genre's appeal is its global safety net: Noah, for instance, failed to earn back its $100 million budget in the U.S., but it's gone on to earn $355 million worldwide.
The duo also mentioned that they believe one of DC Comics' greatest superheroes was modeled after Earth's real savior, the Son of God.
"What was Superman based on?," said Burnett, "He came from his father up above to save mankind. It's not my theory. It's fact, by the way. Do the research. Superman is Jesus."
In 1933, Superman was created by DC Comics' writers Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who like Jesus Christ, both shared a Jewish heritage.
The duo also revealed that before The Bible miniseries appeared on the History Channel last year, they consulted with multiple religious figures such as Joel Osteen, T.D. Jakes, Cardinal Donald Wuerl and Rick Warren to ensure that nothing controversial or inaccurate would appear in the aforementioned series which starred Diogo Morgado as Jesus Christ.
"We worked hand in hand," said Downey, "It slowed down the process, because each step of the way the early drafts were sent out to this team. We had to wait for the notes to return. When suggestions were made or corrections were made, we'd implement them into the drafts and then send them out again."
Burnett credits his successful career to God and the principles that can found in the Scriptures.
"The point here is the mainstream intelligentsia of journalists, people like you in New York and L.A., maybe don't understand the fabric of the nation," said Burnett, "This nation was built under the Bible and free enterprise. ... Because of Touched by an Angel, which is a very middle-of-the-country show; Survivor, a very middle-of-the-country show; Shark Tank, a very middle-of-the-country show, I think we understand our viewers."
A.D.: Beyond the Bible is slated to appear on NBC in Spring 2015.
